Neden Koşuyorum

The Istanbul marathon is coming up this weekend. PTA members Nuray, Sabina and myself will be making steps for a cause, a very important one.

At the beginning of the year, Türkiye was struck with a catastrophic earthquake with tens of thousands of lives lost and millions without a home. Immense sadness and grief spread across the country. The courage of Turkey’s people to come together and help was contagious, so we as the MEFIS community did our part too.

A group of MEFIS mothers collected necessities and treats for children and assembled several hundred backpacks that were distributed to the displaced in Pendik and to locations in the disaster zone. That’s where we discovered the kindness and compassion of Gülmek İyileştirir Derneği and its creator, Aslı.

Being both active members in the community and MEFIS PTA, we decided it was only right to continue to support GID through the PTA. We raised over 100 thousand TL collectively alongside the incredible students of grade 4.

Gülmek İyileştirir currently is collaborating with other charities, entrepreneurs and government organizations on the 100. Year Republic Village (100. Yıl Köyü), a public housing project to house hundreds of families still without a home. It will be a self sustaining community attached to Kemal Mustafa University in Hatay. Once it serves it purpose of serving victims with comfortable housing for three years, it will convert to dormitory accommodation for university students. It is a project which will provide a continuity of accommodation to those who need it most.


This year our goals are bigger and wish to be part of the reason the 100 yil koy will stand. For this fun-run we hope to raise 50 thousand Turkish Lira from MEFIS and our wider community.

The website is in Turkish, however easily translated while using google chrome. All you need to do is click the red button “online bağış yap” and you’ll be directed to a payment method page, simply enter your name and credit card details and complete by clicking on “bağışla”.

All donations no matter how big or small are going to make a difference in the end goal of raising 3 million TL for Gülmek iyileştirir. Let’s do this MEFIS, dig deep and make out steps count!
